Operations and Recreational Boating Safety

As Smithfield’s volunteer maritime lifesavers, qualified auxiliarists regularly perform a variety of maritime missions on our local waterways, ranging from the James River and the Hampton Roads to Nansemond and Pagan Rivers, and even our local backwaters such as Bennett’s creek. Some of our missions include:

 Coast Guard Auxiliary operations decals
• Maritime Observation and Safety
• Regatta Safety
• Search-and-Rescue
• Aids to Navigation Surveys
• Coast Guard Operations Support
• Environmental Response
• On-The-Water Training
• Qualification and Testing

During FY2016 alone, Flotilla 59 logged over 1,000 hours on the waters of our local waterways, and and more in recent years. In 2014, 2015 and 2016, two different crews from Flotilla 05-09 won the 5th Coast Guard District Search-and-Rescue event, competing against teams from the Mid-Atlantic stretching from Baltimore, MD to Wilmington, NC.
